Help Children and Families Affected by the Eruption of Taal Volcano
Taal Volcano is disrupting lives, particularly those of children
Taal Volcano, one of the Philippines’ most active and dangerous volcanoes, is currently erupting. It is placing the lives and livelihoods of many, including children and their families, at risk.
The Department of Science and Technology - Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) has raised Alert Level 4 or “hazardous eruption imminent”.
The widespread disruption has affected families within areas at risk within a 14km radius of the main crater of the volcano, where an estimated 460,000 people live, approximately 184,000 of whom are children. As of January 13, over 24,500 people have sought shelter in 75 evacuation centers in the CALABARZON region (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, and Quezon provinces, and Lucena City).
Ash from the volcano has fallen throughout CALABARZON and in other areas including Metro Manila, Bulacan, Pampanga, Bataan, Tarlac, and Nueva Ecija. Exposure to volcanic ash is dangerous and may cause a wide variety of conditions including throat irritation, conditions similar to bronchitis and asthma, eye irritation, and skin problems.
PHIVOLCS officials have also warned that eruptions may continue for months and be exceedingly destructive. For instance, a strong eruption could displace water in Taal Lake and create a tsunami that could ravage lakeshore communities.
Save the Children Philippines is on the ground in Batangas to determine the extent of humanitarian needs there, particularly of children who are most vulnerable in times of crises such as these.
